3 Questions To Ask Your Crane Hire Company

Posted on

A crane eases construction activities such as hoisting and lowering heavy and bulky items. Besides, it helps avoid the risks associated with carrying heavy loads as you climb ladders or steep staircases. Crane hire is a flexible option for contractors or homebuilders who need cranes for short-term use. This piece puts forward some questions to ask a crane rental company as you hire a crane.

1. Does The Crane Have An Operator?

Although crane operation seems fun, it is a risky affair. Therefore, you must ensure that the rental crane comes with an operator. You should also inquire about the operator's welfare. For example, are the operator fees included in the standard charge? When working away from town, do you need to provide the operator with accommodation? Does the operator have a specified number of working hours? It is an essential concern if your project has short timelines and you intend to work 24/7.

Besides, the company should deploy riggers to conduct crane rigging work. Ideally, these professionals help the operator set up and operate the crane. For instance, they mark blindspots and decide the load pick-up and drop-off points. Moreover, the rigging crew acquaints other site employees with the crane operation protocols. It goes a long way in helping prevent accidents at the site.

2. What Are The Rental Conditions?

The company must detail its rental conditions. For instance,

  • Will the company offer transport to and from the client's location? Remember, you could incur significant expenses and inconveniences if you do not own a trailer to move the crane.
  • Will the company deploy mechanics to service and repair the crane? What repairs does the client pay for? Ideally, you should not have to cater to maintenance repairs since the company is liable for standard wear and tear.
  • What are the crane rental charges? Ask the company to break down its pricing to ensure an easy time negotiating.
  • Does the crane have the required insurance coverage? Are clients required to take extra insurance? Remember, this coverage comes in handy in case of an accident.

3. What Safety Measures Should Clients Observe?

Crane operation and safety go hand in hand. Consequently, the crane rental company must detail the safety measures clients should observe. Moreover, the operator and rigging crew should help you initiate and enforce the various crane safety measures. For instance, you should install barricades around the operating area. Safety signage goes a long way in warning people about ongoing crane operations. The rigging crew must also inspect the crane for defects that could cause accidents.
